EV Charger Installation in the Galveston Bay Area — Level 2, Permitted

Level-2 EV charger installs across the Galveston Bay and South Houston corridor — permitted, inspected, and done right the first time.

Licensed master electrician TDLR EC #EECELE00037785 27+ years

We pull the Houston permit, run a load calculation before we ever quote a panel upgrade, and stand behind the work with a workmanship warranty.

No obligation, no upsell. Call or text for a same-day callback.

Load calc first

First we check whether you even need a panel upgrade

You've probably read that most EV charger installs don't need a panel upgrade. That's often true — and we agree with you.

So before we ever quote you one, we run a load calculation on your actual panel to find out for sure. We add up what your home really draws, factor in the charging amperage your car and charger need (typically 40A or 48A on a dedicated 240-volt circuit), and check it against your service capacity. If the numbers say you don't need an upgrade, we won't sell you one.

That's the whole point of doing it this way. A lot of installs come down to a single dedicated circuit and a tidy mount — no new panel required. Sometimes the honest answer is that your panel is maxed out, and we'll show you the math instead of asking you to take our word for it. Either way, you get the real picture before any money is on the table.

This is the opposite of the conflicting-quote runaround — one electrician says you need an upgrade, the next says you don't, and you're left wondering who's upselling you. We'd rather show you the load calc.

The Houston permit fact

In Houston, only a master electrician can pull this permit — that's us

Here's a fact most homeowners don't know: in the City of Houston, electrical permits are only issued to registered master electricians. You legally can't pull this permit yourself, even if you wanted to.

We're the registered master electrician who pulls it, and it's included in the job. We file the permit, do the work to NEC 2023 code, and schedule the inspection.

Why it matters that this gets done by the book — these are the real, documented downsides of skipping it (not scare tactics):

  • Insurance can deny a claim on work that was done without a required permit and inspection.
  • It can stall a home sale. Unpermitted electrical work flagged at resale becomes the buyer's leverage — or a deal-killer.
  • Failed inspection means paying twice — once for the hack job, again to make it right.

So if an electrician asks you to apply for the permit, in Houston that's a red flag worth noticing. A registered master electrician pulls it, and the permit stays with the house. (Do you need a permit for electrical work in Texas? →)

Confirm the current City of Houston Level-2 EV permit fee before publishing any dollar figure (research had ~$100.71 + $33.56 admin — verify it's still current). Until confirmed, copy states the permit is pulled and included, fee per the current City of Houston schedule, with no hard number.

Scope, up front

What a proper Level-2 install includes

No surprises, no "we'll figure it out when we get there." Here's exactly what we do:

Load calculation first

To confirm whether your panel can take the charger as-is (most can).

A dedicated 240-volt circuit

Sized for your charger's amperage (commonly 40A or 48A).

Hardwired charger or a NEMA 14-50 outlet

We recommend the right one for your charger and panel (more on that in the FAQ).

Clean mounting

The unit goes where you want it, run tidy back to the panel.

Permit pulled and inspection scheduled

By our master electrician — included.

A spotless cleanup

Our work gets done off a checklist, start to finish, and the job site is left clean.

That last part isn't marketing fluff — it's the language our own customers use. One verified Housecall Pro review put it plainly:

"He explained the work… ensured that the work was done correctly… The job site was spotless… He has a checklist that will ensure a thorough job from start to finish."

Confirmed list of charger brands/models TriCoast commonly installs (Tesla Wall Connector, Universal Wall Connector, ChargePoint, etc.) and whether install of a customer-supplied unit is supported. Straight talk on price

What an EV charger install costs

Straight talk, no fake "starting at" hook.

Typical Level-2 install — our area $552$1,379 You get the number for your job before any work starts.

What moves the number inside that range

  • Distance from the panel — a charger right next to the panel is simpler than a long run across the garage or to a detached spot.
  • Hardwired vs. a NEMA 14-50 outlet — the right choice depends on your charger and amperage.
  • Whether you genuinely need a panel upgrade — which we determine with the load calculation, not a guess. If you do, a panel upgrade typically runs $1,183–$1,972 (see panel upgrades →).

We give you the number for your job before any work starts. If spreading it out helps, ask us about financing.

The common blocker

"But my panel is full — no more slots"

This is the most common blocker we hear, and it's a fair one. A full panel doesn't automatically mean you're stuck or that you're in for a big upgrade.

The load calculation settles it. Depending on what we find, the answer might be a load-management device that lets the charger share capacity intelligently, a reworked circuit, or — if the math genuinely calls for it — a panel upgrade. The point is that it's decided by the calc, not by a guess and not by whatever's most profitable to sell you. That's how we keep the no-upsell promise concrete instead of a slogan. Honest trade-off

Not always the cheapest — but permitted, code-correct, and warrantied

We'll be honest

We're not always the cheapest quote you'll get. We pull the permit, do the work to NEC 2023 code, schedule the inspection, and warranty what we install. That costs a little more than a box-store retrofit or a handyman who skips the paperwork — and it's the difference between a job that passes inspection and stays with the house, and one you pay for twice.

Excellent communication in setting up the appointment! Donald is awesome. He explained the work, started immediately and ensured that the work was done correctly. The job site was spotless after the work was completed, and I was impressed that he has a checklist that will ensure a thorough job from start to finish. Outstanding company. Highly recommend.

I had a generator inlet and sub panel installed by Jason at TriCoast. The work was great, cleaned up their mess and tested everything before they left. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for a professional electrical project. Pricing was extremely fair for the work that was done. Give them a call, you will not regret it.

FAQ

EV charger installation — FAQ

Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in Houston?

Yes. In Houston, electrical permits are only issued to registered master electricians, so you legally can't pull it yourself. We pull it, and it's included in the job — along with scheduling the inspection.

Will I need a panel upgrade to add a charger?

Often, no. Many EV installs don't require one. Rather than assume either way, we run a load calculation on your actual panel first to verify whether you genuinely need an upgrade — and if you don't, we won't sell you one.

How much does an EV charger installation cost?

Typically $552–$1,379, depending on your charger type, how far the install is from the panel, and whether a panel upgrade is genuinely needed. If one is, a panel upgrade typically runs $1,183–$1,972. You get the number for your specific job before any work starts.

Should I worry about an electrician who asks me to pull the permit myself?

In Houston, yes — that's a red flag. Electrical permits there are only issued to registered master electricians, so a proper installer pulls it for you. The permit then stays with the house, which helps at resale.

What's the difference between a NEMA 14-50 outlet and a hardwired charger?

A NEMA 14-50 is a 240-volt outlet your charger plugs into (like a large dryer outlet); a hardwired charger is wired directly to the circuit with no plug. Hardwiring is often used for higher continuous amperage and a cleaner permanent install. We'll recommend the right one for your specific charger and panel.
